History

The story of the Louisville Slugger begins in 1884 when a young John A. “Bud” Hillerich, a woodworker at his father’s woodworking shop, crafted a bat for Pete Browning, a local Louisville baseball player.

Browning broke his bat during a game and Hillerich offered to make him a new one. Browning accepted, and with the new bat, he went on to have a great performance, leading to other players seeking out Hillerich for their bats. Thus, the Louisville Slugger was born. The Hillerich family officially registered the name “Louisville Slugger” in 1894.

Over the decades, the Louisville Slugger became the bat of choice for countless baseball Hall of Famers and everyday players alike, solidifying its place in baseball history. The museum opened its doors in 1996, allowing fans to experience the legacy of this iconic brand.
